Restorative Dentistry

Some dental problems are simple, and others are much more complex. Restorative dentistry involves the study, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the oral cavity, teeth, and supporting structures.

The main focus of restorative dentistry is to rehabilitate and restore the function and appearance of the teeth and mouth, while meeting the psychological needs of the patient.

Restorative dentistry involves three distinct areas of dentistry. These are known as endodontics, periodontics and prosthodontics. Sometimes just one area is needed in order to restore the patient’s oral function and health. Other times, a combination of these areas of treatment are necessary in order to provide a solution for patients that have injuries, illnesses and conditions that require multi-faceted care.

Who might require restorative dentistry?

Restorative dentistry is essential for patients with complex treatment requirements. This may include patients:

  • who have completed radiotherapy or surgery for oral cancers.
  • who have sustained excessive damage deriving from periodontal disease, extensive tooth decay, acid erosion and more.
  • with sleep apnea.
  • with facial deformities.
  • with pain or discomfort in the joints of their jaw.
  • who have been affected by developmental conditions such as cleft lip and palate or hypodontia, and as such, require specialist multidisciplinary attention.
  • who have suffered severe trauma or injury to the face, teeth, mouth, neck or jaw.

Wherever possible, restorative dentistry will always prioritize saving and preserving your natural teeth. Prosthetics will only be used when there is no viable alternative and the overall function, health and appearance of the mouth and teeth depend on it.

What types of restorations might be recommended?

Dental restorations can take many forms and include:

  • Cavity fillings
  • Crowns
  • Root canal
  • Dental implants
  • Bridgework
  • Dentures
  • Dental veneers
  • Invisalign®
  • Conventional orthodontic braces
